Wart Treatment Options

What are Warts

If warts make an appearance in your life, there is no need to panic. Thought warts can be unsightly, painful or excessive, nowadays it is quite simple and painless to remove warts once they sprout. Yet, as important as it is to have warts treated right away, it is even more important to prevent their presence completely. At our Beaver Valley Foot Clinic locations near Pittsburgh, we help our patients remove and prevent warts from interfering with their daily lives.

-Know when Warts Make an Appearance

Warts, in general, are benign skin growth tumors on the top layers of skin, which are infected by the Human Papilloma Virus. There are various forms of warts, including common, flat, plantar, filiform and other warts. If you do find the presence of warts, always take proper steps to treatment and prevention.

-Treatments Options for Ridding of Warts

Do not try to inappropriately self-treat warts if they appear. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before treating. Using ineffective tools at home, such as emery boards and pumice stones, will only help to spread warts elsewhere. These home tools will not even effect the source of the growth.

Laser treatments, such as the Q-Switch and 1064 lasers, offer the best results, relatively quickly. As with all lasers, short pulses of highly focused light burn away targeted tissues on the surface of skin. The lasers also cut off blood supply to the wart, causing it to eventually die, after a few treatments.

Curettage surgery is also an available treatment, using a small, edged spoon-shaped instrument (a curette) to scoop away the wart. Topical medications, such as the popular Cantharidin, help to lift warts up off of the skin’s surface especially for warts in children. No matter which treatment method is best for you, our experts at Beaver Valley Foot Clinic will help.

-Precautionary Care Against the Return of Warts

There is not necessarily a prevention process to prevent warts from forming. Yet, there are always precautionary measures you can take. Keeping up with washing your hands, and with good hygiene, in general is the most important thing you can do. Also, refrain from biting nails, and getting scrapes or cuts that welcome virus infections. Finally, keeping your skin nourished and moisturized will minimize your chance of acquiring warts.
